In 1905, Ms. Ida M. Abercrombie, recognizing the need to assist Tuskegee students who were in financial need, organized alumni and established the first Tuskegee alumni club in Montgomery, Alabama. Her sole purpose was to have an avenue to help students, from the Montgomery area, who were having financial problems to attend Tuskegee. So she gathered her classmates and other Tuskegee alumni in the Montgomery area and the first off-campus Tuskegee Alumni Chapter was formed (the “Mother Club”), dedicated to helping those students in need of financial assistance. The Montgomery-Tuskegee Alumni Club (MTAC) has flourished since its inception and has touched the lives of many people, not only from the Montgomery area, but throughout the country. Because of the foresight of Ms. Abercrombie in organizing the “Mother Club”, other alumni clubs began to spring up across the country — all dedicated to the same purpose: assisting students financially, and helping to advance the goals of Tuskegee University and her viability.
Over the past 116 years, MTAC has been a source of cultural and entertainment events for the Montgomery area. Most of the events were used to raise funds that provided scholarships or financial assistance for students in the Montgomery metropolitan area attending Tuskegee University. MTAC has sponsored numerous fundraising events to increase our scholarship fund. Fundraising activities included: the Tuskegee University Choir in concert; plays performed by the Tuskegee Little Theatre; fashion shows featuring the Tuskegee University Clothing Department; Broadway plays from New York City; the Broadway musical “Pearlie” produced and directed by MTAC; and a host of other banquets and breakfasts featuring Tuskegee University alumni. MTAC’s scholarships have made it possible for students who would not have been able to attend Tuskegee University due to a lack of funds. The Montgomery-Tuskegee Alumni Club continues to be a front-runner among its peers and is dedicated to helping Tuskegee University increase its student enrollment, increase alumni giving, and advocates of the goals and mission of the University.
